Independent film director Jim Jarmusch’s (Ghost Dog, The Way of the Samurai), romantic comedy of the beautiful undead, Only Lovers Left Alive, premiered second to last at the Cannes Film Festival. The vampire lore-inspired film seems to have left audiences laughing, and that’s a good thing.
Only Lovers Left Alive revolves around Adam, played by Tom Hiddleston (Thor, The Avengers) and Eve, played by Scottish actress Tilda Swinton, two vampires waxing nostalgic for a world that used to be.
The film took over seven years to make it to the big screen. “We just couldn’t get the money”, said Jarmusch to Andrew Pulver of The Guardian.
“We originally had American backers but they dropped out. Anything unusual or unpredictable couldn’t get funded. Fortunately, financier Jeremy Thomas stepped in and helped out producer, Reinhardt Brundig.
I’m particularly grateful to Tilda and John who stayed with me the whole time. Tilda never gave up. Every time I thought we were moving forward, things fell apart. Tilda would say, ‘Don’t worry, when it’s the right time, it will happen – and I’ll be there.’ “
Although no U.S. release date has been announce yet, the film does hit Russian theaters December 5th, and it may be that Sony is eyeing a similar holiday release.
