After the announcement that Sonic the Hedgehog was getting a redesign in the wake of widespread backlash to the first movie trailer, some fans were ultimately questioning the decision. Since the film was set to released in November of 2019 and, with such a short notice to fix the character’s look, it was a matter of concern as to whether this redesign would be completed on time. Some questioned how ethical it was for many of the film’s animators to cram so much of their time fixing this design on such a tight deadline, potentially forcing them to work overtime. Fortunately, the animators and effects artists working on the video game adaptation will be giving more time.
The film’s director, Jeff Fowler, announced on his Twitter page with a picture of Sonic holding a sign with a new release date for the film. He stated that they will be taking more time to make Sonic look right with the hashtag, “No VFX Artists were harmed in the making of this movie”. The film that was initially supposed to be released on November 8th 2019 will now be releasing on Valentines Day, February 14th 2020. While some may still express skepticism even with this delay, others can at least appreciate that people working on the film will get more time to redefine the character’s iconic look, especially with such a last minute announcement in production. Now Sonic fans will hopefully get to see the Blue Blur look even better on the big screen, even if it means they’ll have to wait a few months more.
Sonic The Hedgehog is set for release on February 14, 2020.
