After winning the Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival, Bong Joon-ho’s dark comedy Parasite is predicted to continue its success during a theatrical run in Korea. According to KOBIS, the Korean Film Council database, Parasite is on track to top movies such as Aladdin and Godzilla: King of the Monsters during its debut weekend.
This is the first Korean film to win the highest award at Cannes. Upon arriving back in Korea, Bong commented that “the Cannes Film Festival has given a big present to the Korean film industry to celebrate its 100th anniversary.” With more wins like these for Korean films, it can possibly help more filmmakers from the country get recognized and encourage others to become more involved in the industry. Parasite has also been nominated for best film at the Sydney Film Festival.
Parasite examines the relationships between two families occupying different social standings. The film combines drama and gallows humor to depict the realities of Korean society. Its cast includes Lee Sun-Kyun, Cho Yeo-Jeong, Choi Woo-Shik, Park So-Dam, and Chang Hyae-Jin.
Joon-ho’s previous directorial successes include 2013’s Snowpiercer and Netflix’s Okja starring Lily Collins and Jake Gyllenhaal. Parasite will be released on May 30 in South Korea. Watch the trailer below.
