Sonic Teams Up With Professional Athletes in New Super Bowl Ad for ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’

With the Super Bowl coming up in just a few days, it’s that time of year again for extravagant commercials and promotional material on upcoming films. In this case, Paramount released a new Super Bowl ad for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, this time with a few professional athletes discussing the influence the blue blur has had on their career.

The ad features New Orleans Saints’ player Michael Thomas, Carolina Panthers’ player Christian McCaffrey, Nascar’s Kyle Busch and Olympic Champion Allyson Felix. Each one discusses how they’ve became the great athletes they are today through an important influence. They mentioned how incredibly fast this person is, that they’ve learned all of his “spinning techniques” and how he is “all about the rings.” That is…. until the athletes ask what this ad was for again, only to reveal that Sonic has been filming them for no real explanation, aside from expressing how amazing he is. The ad then cuts to footage of Sonic’s upcoming film, featuring a lot of action and some comedic bits with Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik/Eggman.

With the film coming out so close to game day, it made sense for Paramount to create a Sonic Super Bowl ad. Thanks to the character’s much-needed redesign, Paramount is taking advantage of the now-expressive marketability of the iconic SEGA gaming mascot. This ad is just a small glimpse of what Jeff Fowler and his team will be giving audiences with their video game film adaptation.

Sonic the Hedgehog is set for release February 14th 2020. Watch the Full Ad Below:

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
