‘Sonic Movie’ Director Response to Criticisms by Announcing Production Update

Sonic The Hedgehogs first trailer has finally been released but not exactly to the response Paramount has hoped for. Many have responded to the movie with utter disgust with the main criticism being Sonic’s overall design. Many are claiming it to look creepy, unnatural and needlessly realistic for character that is essentially a talking blue hedgehog. It has gotten so bad that many twitter artists have photo shopped images of Sonic looking more like how he does in the video games as opposed to how he does in the movie. The movie’s director, Jeff Fowler has responded to the criticism on twitter by stating that they will update the design of the character after the negative backlash.

This move is certainly an attempt to win over fans who were dissatisfied with the initial design of the character. While it is reassuring that the creators of this movie are acknowledge the problem at hand, this does however lead into new issues that may occur with the video game adaptation. Considering that the movie is expected to be released this November, many are wondering if they can fix this glaring issue in such a short amount of time. Some are claiming that it could potentially look worse if they want to turn around with this new design so quickly after the first trailer. Many are also stating that they should’ve had time to realize that this design might not be working for the film before adding extra needless work for the animators. Unless the project is delayed to a 2020 release date, some are skeptical of the quick turnaround for fixing the character, even if the people behind the film are acknowledging their mistake. Only time will tell if “The Blue Blur” will get a proper big screen imagining.

Sonic the Hedgehog is set to release November 8th 2019.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
