According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sonia Braga (The Wine of Summer) has joined the cast of Wonder starring Julia Roberts (Money Monster) and Jacob Tremblay (Room). Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) is directing from a screenplay adapted by Jack Thorne and Steve Conrad.
Based on R.J. Palacio’s best-selling YA novel, the story centers on Auggie Pullman (Tremblay), a 5th grade boy born with significant facial deformities who now is entering mainstream classes at school for the first time. He faces the challenge of convincing his classmates that he is just an ordinary kid despite his different appearance. Roberts plays Auggie’s mom, while Braga will play Auggie’s grandmother. Also in the cast are Owen Wilson (Zealander 2) playing Auggie’s father, Noah Jupe (AMC’s The Night Manager) who will play Auggie’s best friend, Daveed Diggs (Broadway’s Hamilton) in the role of a teacher, and Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) as the principal at Auggie’s school.
David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are producing under their Mandeville Films banner. Participant Media and Walden Media are joining Lionsgate and TIK Films to co-finance and executive produce.
Brazilian-born Braga, famous for her starring role in 1985’s Kiss of the Spider Woman opposite William Hurt (Captain America: Civil War), recently starred in the drama Aquarius which was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Braga also will appear in Luke Cage starring Mike Colter (based on the Marvel comic character of the same name) which premieres September 30th on Netflix.
Wonder is currently filming in Vancouver and is scheduled to bow in U.S. theaters on April 7, 2017.
