Disney’s new film Snow White was met with controversy even before the film premiered. With controversies about the casting, the actors and the success of the original, the film seemed doomed at the start. Once the film was released it brought in $85 million at the box office with a reported $240-270 million according to Collider. However, the film seems to have upcoming success as it could overtake Mickey 17 and hold a spot in the top 5 films for 2025 so far.
The film currently holds a low 42% on Rotten Tomatoes, however the audience score is a much higher 74%. With the critics consensus being “Snow White is hardly a grumpy time at the movies thanks to Rachel Zegler’s luminous star turn, but its bashful treatment of the source material along with some dopey stylistic choices won’t make everyone happy, either.”
Forbes even said “There are very few ways to spin that. Snow White is close to the worst-performing live-action Disney adaptation ever…” To give perspective, the live-action The Lion King brought in $191 million to the box office domestically on its opening weekend whereas Snow White made $43 million Despite this, Zegler still receives praise for both her singing and acting in the film.
Another reviewer, Ross Bonaime said that “Considering the pressure this movie has going against it in remaking one of Disney’s first true masterpieces and their first-ever animated feature, it’s surprising how well Snow White pulls off this update…It’s not nearly perfect, and it can get soppy at times in trying to bring this story up to date, but its earnestness and heart mostly make up for these flaws.”
The film has received mixed reviews with most agreeing it is difficult to adapt such an iconic film. Viewers can still form their opinions as Snow White is still in theaters.
