‘Snow White’ Has A Disappointing Opening Weekend Debut

Rachel Zegler in 'Snow White'

Ever since the live-action Snow White began production, there seems to be controversy surrounding it, resulting in a global debut of $87 million, with an estimated $43 million in the U.S. box office and $44 million in overseas markets.

Negative press first stemmed from commentary surrounding the features’ modernization of some aspects of the 1937 Disney animated classic. Then, the media’s attention was drawn to the relationship between the two leads of the film, Rachel Zegler, and Gal Gadot, as the two actresses have opposing political views, making fans believe this is a point of contention between the two stars. The features’ content itself seemed not to help either, with a B+ on CinemaScore and 44% on Rotten Tomatoes. From this, it can be inferred that the feature, directed by The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Marc Webb, was underwhelming and could have a “dull theatrical run” based on its CinemaScore, as it is relatively low for Disney live-action remakes.

Snow White’s debut of approximately $45 million is on the same level as Tim Burton’s 2019 Dumbo, which made around $350 million in its entire theatrical run. The film has also fallen short of Kenneth Branagh’s 2017 Cinderella and 2014’s Maleficent; both debuts were in the $60 million range. But, it seems that Snow White’s biggest obstacle might be its budget, as the film costs an estimated $270 million to produce and market, meaning the movie has to generate approximately $600 million worldwide to break even.
