A new installment in the Are We There Yet? comedy franchise is officially moving forward. Production company Skydance Sports has acquired the rights to Are They Gone Yet?, an upcoming feature film that reunites original stars Ice Cube and Nia Long on screen for the first time in nearly two decades.
The project shifts the family dynamics into a new generational phase, focusing on lead characters Nick Persons (Ice Cube) and Suzanne Persons (Nia Long) as they navigate the unexpected trials of grandparenthood. Screenwriters Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana have been tapped to pen the script.
The original film, Are We There Yet?, debuted in 2005 and followed Nick on a chaotic road trip to transport Suzanne’s young children, Lindsey and Kevin, across the Pacific Northwest. A subsequent follow-up, Are We Done Yet?, was released in 2007 and centered on the family’s transition to suburban living. Collectively, the two theatrical releases generated over $156 million at the global box office. The property’s commercial success additionally led to a television sitcom adaptation that aired on TBS for three seasons between 2010 and 2013, starring Terry Crews and Essence Atkins.
Are They Gone Yet? will be co-produced under a joint effort between Broken Road and Ice Cube’s production company, CubeVision. Joining Ice Cube as producers for the feature are Todd Garner and Jeff Kwatinetz, alongside executive producers Ben Hurwitz and Lauren Gennawey. Development remains in the early phases, and the production has yet to establish an official filming schedule or theatrical release timeline.
Before their family comedy franchise took off, the lead duo famously crossed paths in the mid-1990s. The classic 1995 Friday Trailer offers a nostalgic look at the very beginning of Ice Cube and Nia Long’s early collaborative history within the film industry.
