Good Boy, the latest horror release from Shudder, has debuted at an impressive Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 93% with 54 reviews. The film centers around Indy, a dog who moves into a long vacant house alongside his owner, Todd. Indy begins to sense a dark presence within the house and receives messages from a dog who died long ago. It’s up to him to warn and protect his owner from the sinister forces that lie within the house. The film is directed by Ben Leonberg and stars Shane Jensen, Arielle Friedman and Larry Fessenden, along with Indy, Leonberg’s real life dog.
Good Boy debuted at SXSW earlier this year but did not gain traction until the trailer went viral online about a month ago. The trailer resulted in a large sum of people questioning if the dog dies in the movie. This caused Shudder to increase the size of its theatrical release dramatically. Online buzz does not necessarily equate to box office success, but the very positive reception thus far will likely do Good Boy some favors.
Shudder has its own streaming service in which many indie horror films can be found. They also occasionally release films theatrically, as is the case with Good Boy. Other recent horror films they have released include the V/H/S series, The Ugly Stepsister, The Rule of Jenny Penn, Azrael, Oddity and In a Violent Nature. Good Boy releases in theaters this weekend on October 3, so time will only tell if the film gains traction.
