Universal has announced they will be moving DreamWorks’ Shrek 5 from its December 2026 release window to June 2027. Its new release date is now June 30, 2027. This is sad news for Shrek fans, but it was inevitable that something would move from the admittedly still crowded December.
Currently, December of 2026 is filled to the brim with heavy-hitter films such as Avengers: Doomsday, Ice Age 6, Jumanji 3, and Dune: Part Three. So while we will have to wait a little longer for Shrek 5 now, it would have had a difficult time competing at the box office with all those titans. Keep an ear out for more release date changes, as it is quite possible another film will have to exit that month at some point.
The last Shrek film was Shrek Forever After, which was released in 2010. With the new film moving to 2027, this means we will go over 17 years without a Shrek film. However, DreamWorks did release two spinoff films in the meantime in the form of Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2011 and 2022, respectively. We saw our first glimpse of Shrek 5 earlier this year with a teaser trailer, which DreamWorks released online. The teaser showed off tweaked designs for Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, as well as announcing Zendaya as the voice of Shrek and Fiona’s daughter. Additionally, the film was indirectly teased in the final scene of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, in which Puss, Kitty Softpaws, and Perrito travel to Far Far Away to visit Shrek and company.
Universal also announced that they would be moving an untitled Illumination film to April 16, 2027. Illumination is known for the Despicable Me and Minions franchises, but it is unclear if this new film is related to those or a different IP.
