It’s an exciting time for those following announcements from the 78th Cannes Film Festival. Just few days after naming the official lineup, the festival released the names of the jurors and films in the Critics’ Week sidebar. The week, which consists of first and second films, will run from May 14th-22nd, 2025.
Long-time Sean Baker collaborator, Shih-Ching Tsou, will premiere her feature at the festival. Tsou worked with the Oscar-winning filmmaker long before his historic Anora wins. The American-Taiwanese director produced several of Baker’s past moving films including Tangerine, The Florida Project, and Red Rocket.
Baker co-wrote and edited Tsou’s submission, Left-Handed Girl. The film follows mother and her two daughters as they navigate life in Taipei. Cannes Critics’ Week Artistic Director Ava Cahen described:
The film was edited by Sean. it’s true that there’s a connection, I’m not going to hide it, and I don’t think Shih-Ching Tsou will either… It’s a bit reminiscent of Tangerine and The Florida Project, for the way it captures reality, with a form of wonder, or at least a desire for the fabulous.
The jury will be led by Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen (The Beasts). Other jurors include: Moroccan journalist Jihane Bougrine, French-Canadian cinematographer Josée Deshaies (The Beast), British actor Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Indonesian producer Yulia Evina Bhara (Tiger Stripes).
