Shelley Duvall Returns in ‘The Forest Hills’ After 20 Year Hiatus

The leading actress from the 1980 film The Shining, is returning to the screens after a 20 year absence from acting. Her return will be in the indie horror film The Forest Hills from writer-director Scott Goldberg.

The Forest Hills is a film that follows Rico, a man who has nightmare visions after experiencing head-force trauma on a camping trip in the Catskill Mountains. The Shining actress plays Rico’s mother, who acts as an inner voice for him throughout the film.

Goldberg said that Duvall’s acting in 1980 classic film was an inspiration for what his vision for The Forests Hills.

He said “Shelley contributed to The Shining being an absolute masterpiece by giving her all, and performing in a way that really showcased the fear and horror of a mother in isolation.”

Duvall hasn’t stated why she retired from acting, leading others to speculate the reasoning. Duvall’s last acting role was her role as Detective Dubrinski in the 2002 indie comedy film Manna From Heaven. She would retire the same year that the film was released.

She would disappear from the spotlight after her role in the 2002 film and wouldn’t resurface until 2016, where she made headlines. She appeared in an interview on the Dr. Phil Show and explained her struggles with mental health. In the interview, she exclaimed, “I am very sick. I need help.” This led to actors and film-lovers all across the world to rush in to offer any support that Duvall needed.
