Actress Shelley Duvall has passed away at age 75. Her death was reported by Gary Springer.
Duvall was born in 1949 in Texas, specifically in the town of Fort Worth. She broke onto the silver screen in 1970 with Brewster McCloud, a 1970 film from Robert Altman.
Over her career, Duvall appeared in a number of films. Some of Duvall’s biggest roles include Annie Hall, Nashville, 3 Women, and she even appeared in Popeye, in which she played Olive Oyl to Robin William’s Popeye the sailor man.
Duvall also appeared in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror-classic, The Shining. The film, based off Stephen King’s novel of the same name, saw Shelley Duvall play opposite Jack Nicholson, playing his wife as the duo, and their young son, take up residence in a hotel over winter to take care of it, only to discover the sinister secrets it holds.
Despite how well known her work may be for The Shining, it wasn’t an easy role for her to bring to life. Duvall was very open about the negative experience working under Kubrick, saying that she’d be in tears over the experiences on set all throughout shooting.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Duvall’s partner, Dan Gilroy, had this to say in regards to her passing: “my dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.”
She is survived by her three younger brothers, Scott, Stewart, and Shane.
