April Fools? Shazam 2 has revealed its release date as April 1, 2022, according to a schedule released by Warner Bros. to The Hollywood Reporter. Writer Borys Kit tweeted to announce the reveal to the internet.
Not much is known yet about the upcoming sequel, but it has been confirmed that Zachary Levi will return to star as the titular superhero. Asher Angel will additionally reprise his role as Billy Batson, the real-life counterpart to Levi’s Shazam, and screenwriter Henry Gayden has signed on to pen the new film as well.
Shazam, released this past April, surprised audiences and critics alike with its old-fashioned 80’s era superhero fun. This marked another promising entry for DC’s films, with Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Joker all seeing commercial and critical success. Scoring a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and earning over $360 million worldwide, the sequel’s development was announced almost immediately.
Shazam 2 is not the only film DC fans have to look forward to in the 2020s, with Warner Bros. additionally revealing the release dates of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Dwayne Johnson led villain flick Black Adam as Aug. 6 and Dec. 22 of 2021, respectively. Black Adam offers a unique case as, despite being one of Shazam’s greatest villains, he will be getting his own solo movie first. The Flash’s announced solo movie and Aquaman 2 are also set to join Shazam 2 for release in 2022.
For now, fans can revisit the original Shazam while waiting for April Fool’s Day 2022.
