‘Shang-Chi’ surpasses ‘Black Widow’ at Domestic Box Office

The new Marvel hero and a master of martial art has outdone the classic Marvel heroin and Russian super-spy at domestic box office. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has pocketed another $13.3 million on its fourth weekend after its release. It has now reached a domestic total of $196.5 million, more than enough to leave behind Black Widow with only $183 million in the race to the top for the 2021 Box Office.

Shang-Chi has reached new highs in sales for Marvel studios even if we compare it not only to its contemporary partner Black Widow but to other stand-alone superhero movies. The Incredible Hulk from when the MCU was still in its early stages, generated a total of $132 million in 2008. Captain America: The First Avenger made $176 million back in 2011, Ant-Man, from 2015, grossed $180 million, and Thor 181$ million in 2011.

The master of martial arts could scale up the ladder even further to the likes of  Thor: The Dark World (2013) with $206 million and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) with $216 million. A possible reason for its tremendous success could be explained due to its opening window. During these four weeks that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been out in theaters, it did not have any other big competition in its genre.

The latest of Marvel’s superhero movies might see its winning streak come to an end when fans of the genre, always hungry for new stories, make their way to watch the highly anticipated Venom: Let There Be Carnage, set to come out this Friday October 1.
