‘Shang-Chi’ Holds Strong, Takes Number 1 At the Domestic Box Office For the 3rd Straight Week

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has taken control of the US domestic box office for a third straight week, according to Box Office Mojo. The latest MCU picture made $21.7 million at the North American Box Office, proving that, for the correct movie, people are still willing to go out to the cinemas.

In worldwide news, Shang-Chi  has made its way to $300 million across the entire planet, gearing up and looking to be the top movie-grosser of 2021, surpassing Black Widow. This is another huge victory for Marvel, especially during the pandemic filled 2021 that many expected after last year.

In other movie news, the biggest release of last week was Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho, which grossed around $4.5 million and took third place at the box office in its opening weekend. The film was never thought to be a blockbuster, and was also released on HBO Max on the same day. Though that did not slow down a movie like The Suicide Squad, it did slow down a lesser known property like In the Heights earlier in the summer.

Rounding out the top five was Free Guy in second(grossing $5 million in its sixth week), Candyman in fourth(grossing $3.5 million in its fourth week), and James Wan’s Malignant in fifth(grossing $2.7 million in its second weekend). Looking at those numbers, it is clear that Shang-Chi has been doing great in its first three weeks at the box office.

With Venom: Let There Be Carnage coming out next week, it will be interesting to see if Shang-Chi will still be holding strong in its fifth week. However in its fourth week, this week, the only big movie being released is the movie adaptation of the musical Dear Evan Hansen.
