With Superman gearing up for release, other DC projects are gaining more traction in the buildup. Among the other films on their release slate, however, Sgt. Rock will not be moving forward with production.
In their original reporting of the matter, Hollywood Reporter stated that there’s no officially released reason as to why the movie has been halted. However, there are a number of leading rumors as to what happened with production. One source of Hollywood Reporter’s from within Warner Bros. Discovery stated that the film was halted because of the extensive outdoor shooting schedule, while also giving hope that the film isn’t entirely done. Part of their information stated that a decision would ultimately be made by the end of the year, but there’s no concrete information.
Sgt. Rock was slated to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes. Early reports of the story suggest an Indiana Jones-esque adventure. Set during World War II, the titular Rock is tracking down the Spear of Longinus, in a desperate race against Nazis who seek the artifact for their own gain.
Guadagnino helming the project leads to another possible reason for shelving the project. Known for films like Challengers and Call Me By Your Name, Guadagnino hasn’t dipped into the action genre while in the director’s chair. Another source of Hollywood Reporter’s claims that the studio may have halted the movie because of some measured apprehension with trusting Guadagnino with an action film of a sizable budget, but once again, there is no confirmation at this time.
