Zach Cregger, director of recent popular horror films Weapons and Barbarian, is trying his hand at the Resident Evil series. Recently, set photos from the film were taken, revealing details about the direction the adaptation might take.
The set photos show Raccoon City, the primary location of the earlier Resident Evil games. The filming is taking place in Prague, but the photos show the city being transformed into a snowy version of Raccoon City. They also show a map of Raccoon City and a few snow-covered cars. The director previously stated during press for Weapons that the film would stay loyal to the games, but feature its own unique story rather than adapting one specific game. In one interview, he stated, “I played Resident Evil 4 a hundred times through. I’m obsessed with it. And so, I just want to tell a story that feels like it’s honoring the experience you get when you play the games. I haven’t seen the movies, that’s just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That’s just a playground I just love. I think the movie is going to rip.”
It is not clear whether the film will try and fit in with the canon of the games or not, but Cregger at least seems adamant for staying faithful to them. If it does fit in with the games, it would likely have to take place before Resident Evil 3, in which Raccoon City is destroyed by a bomb. Austin Abrams is the lead of the film, and he will be playing an original character. It remains to be seen if series favorites such as Leon S. Kennedy, Ada Wong, Albert Wesker or Jill Valentine will make appearances. The film is being distributed by Sony Pictures and releases September 18th, 2026.
