This winter marks the latest film adaptation of the Murder on the Orient Express. After a fairly successful introduction to the box office this month, the Kenneth Branagh-helmed movie is already poised to have a sequel. Luckily for the filmmakers, there will already be established source material, as the film will have a basis in the iconic Hercule Poirot canon. In an amusing turn, much like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his beloved Sherlock Holmes series, Christie could not stand her creation, detective Poirot. Her reaction to the adaptation of the next book in the series, Death on the Nile, would most likely be less than enthusiastic. Luckily for the filmmakers, it looks like they will still have an audience clamoring for the sequel.
Murder on the Orient Express is currently still in theaters. Along with Branagh, it stars Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Michelle Pfeiffer (Stardust), Willem Dafoe (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Penélope Cruz (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Leslie Odom Jr. (Smash), Derek Jacobi (The King’s Speech), Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast), and Judi Dench (Skyfall). As the sequel will be set in an entirely different locale, it seems like Branagh is the only one confirmed to reprise his role.
