Sequel To ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ In Progress

Although Mary Poppins Returns just hit theaters late December, talk of a sequel has arisen. The light-hearted musical fantasy film starring the likes of Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda was talked about recently by director Robert Marshall during the BAFTA Tea Party. In an interview with The Sun, Marshall stated that the ideas surrounding a sequel to this P.L. Travers’s literary-based film are still in their early phase.

Given that there are eight books in Travers’s series, Marshall believes that there is still plenty of information to use. He even connected the film to popular film franchises such as James Bond and Star Wars. The connection to the more established franchises, therefore, normalizes the idea of a second film.

Mary Poppins Returns made out well in a short period of time, making around $191 million in under a month. With the film having made $142,558,412 in the box office to date, the Walt Disney Company is likely looking forward to duplicating this success with a second film.

While the newest Mary Poppins followed suit from the 1964 original film with animated scenes and catchy musical numbers, the second one may bring in a new type of style while still staying true to the original storyline.
