

The 38th Annual European Film Awards were held on Saturday, January 17th. Sentimental Value was the big winner at the ceremony, with the Norwegian drama winning multiple awards, including the top prize, Best Film, as well as two acting awards for Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve. Joachim Trier also took home the Best Director prize, alongside the Best Screenplay prize, which he won with co-writer Eskil Vogt. Additionally, the film’s composer, Hania Rani, took home the Best Score award.
The other big winner at the European Film Awards was the Spanish-language thriller Sirāt, which won multiple awards, including best production design, sound design, editing, best cinematography, and Best Casting (this year marks the first time the award has been given at the EFA). Other winners include the German drama Sound of Falling, which won Best Costume Design; the French animated film Arco, which won the European Animation award; and Bugonia, which won Best Makeup and Hairstyling (another first awarded this year).
The ceremony included speeches by Jafar Panahi, the Iranian director of It Was Just an Accident, which was nominated for multiple awards, as well as speeches by Liv Ullmann and Alice Rohrwacher, who were both awarded the EFA Life Achievement Award and European Achievement in World Cinema Award, respectively.
