Though its not set to arrive in theaters until sometime this fall – an official date has yet to be announced – upstart distributor Neon has released a tantalizing first peek of Beach Rats, the critically admired coming of age film they snapped up at the recent Sundance Film Festival.
Eliza Hittman wrote and directed the film and took home the Directing Award at Sundance last month. The film – which stars fresh-faced Harris Dickinson (soon set to film the young adult adaptation The Darkest Minds) – follows an aimless young man over the course one particularly impactful summer in Brooklyn. The official synopsis reads as:
An aimless teenager on the outer edges of Brooklyn struggles to escape his bleak home life and navigate questions of self-identity, as he balances his time between his delinquent friends, a potential new girlfriend, and older men he meets online. As Frankie’s competing desires begin to consume him, his decisions leave him hurtling towards irreparable consequences.
Neon also picked up buzzy titles Ingrid Goes West and Roxanne Roxanne out of Sundance this year. Their 2017 slate also includes the Anne Hathaway monster flick Colossal and The Racer and the Jailbird starring Matthias Schoenaerts (A Bigger Splash) and Adéle Earchopoulos (Blue is the Warmest Color).
