SEGA And Universal Partner For A ‘Shinobi’ Movie

Just ahead of the release of Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Universal has announced a new adaptation of one of SEGA’s iconic video game franchises. The film will be based upon the Shinobi series.

The Shinobi series follows Joe Musashi, a seemingly ordinary man who has the capabilities of a ninja. The string of games continuously puts him up against new foes to test his physical abilities while seeking to push him to the extreme.

While Shinobi began as an arcade game, home ports followed soon after, including one on SEGA’s own console, the Master System. The series would continue to appear on SEGA consoles up to the SEGA Saturn, and would even break into Nintendo’s library, as well as appearing on the PlayStation.

A new installment in the Shinobi series was announced in 2023, which mxdwn.com reported on. No release date has been set.

The press release for the brand new film stated that Sam Hargrave is set to helm. As a director, Hargrave has helmed the first two Extraction films, and is slated to direct the third, as well as a number of short films. Hargrave has also helped with the stunts in several films, including entries in the MCU and Pirates Of The Caribbean.

The script for the film will be penned by Ken Kobayashi, with Marc Platt Productions and Story Kitchen serving as production companies. SEGA will serve as a production company as well, with Toru Nakahara sitting in as producer.

As stated earlier, SEGA has already made a splash in the film industry. 2020 saw Sonic The Hedgehog hit theaters, becoming a financial hit, and spawning two sequels, with the second debuting this Christmas.
