Netflix officially announced a slate of projects in production in partnership with the video game company Sega.

These projects included a new kid-oriented Sonic the Hedgehog TV series, as well as film adaptations of Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven. Sega’s Head Producer Toru Nakahara said, “Expect something cute yet cool for Sonic, hilariously crazy for Crazy Taxi, and a badass action drama for Stranger Than Heaven, because we’ve got some amazing creative ideas lined up and we are just getting started. The whole team is absolutely thrilled!”

The Sonic series is being developed with Toru Nakahara and Carlos Stevens and is set to target “an upper pre-school audience.” Netflix elaborated by saying they wanted “a high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series built for kids who want to feel a little edge, a little attitude, and a lot of ‘that’s my crew’ wish fulfillment.” Sega previously worked with Netflix for Sonic with the animated show Sonic Prime, which ran for 3 seasons on Netflix from 2022-2024.

Crazy Taxi is being developed as a feature film, with Dan Gregor & Doug Mand (The Naked Gun) writing the script. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara are producing. The 1999 arcade game invloving high-speed taxi rides gained a devout fanbase over the years, with another game releasing next year in Crazy Taxi: World Tour.

Stranger Than Heaven is an upcoming game from RGG Studio, the developer of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. It takes place in 20th Century Japan and will act as an early prequel to the Like a Dragon series. A feature film is already in the works with Nakahara producing.

The fandoms of these games deserve storytelling that honors what makes each title special, and we know Netflix shares that commitment. This is just the start of what these titles can become.”
