The trailer for Johnny Depp and Robert Pattinson’s newest film has officially been released today by Samuel Goldwyn Films. Titled Waiting for the Barbarians, the film follows Mark Rylance’s Magristrate, who commands an army looking over a vast desert frontier until Depp’s eerie Colonel Joll comes in, determined to defeat a mysterious group of seemingly dangerous “barbarians” surrounding the land around them. Pattinson plays an officer in their platoon.
It is based on a 1980 novel of the same name written by South African writer John Maxwell Coetzee.
Waiting for the Barbarians is directed by the Columbian Ciro Guerra in his first ever English-language film. In 2016, he was nominated for Best Foreign Language film at the eighty-eighth Academy Awards for Embrace the Serpent. Depp’s last role was as a detective in the murder cases of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. in 2018’s City of Lies, while Pattinson most recently shined alongside Timothée Chalamet and Willem Dafoe in 2019’s The King and The Lighthouse, respectively.
As well as Rylance and these two A-listers, Waiting for the Barbarians will also star Greta Scacchi, David Dencik, Sam Reid, and Gana Bayarsaikahn. It is scheduled to be released on Video on Demand on August 7th.
