Tangerine tells the story of Sin-Dee, a transgender prostitute in Los Angeles who comes back to town after a one-month stint in jail and hears from her best friend Alexandra that her pimp boyfriend, Chester, has been unfaithful. Together, she and Alexandra go on a trek through LA to track Chester down and encounter all sorts of colorful characters and situations along the way – in other words, a classic hero’s journey.
Spirit Award-winning indie filmmaker Sean Baker (Starlet) directed the film – which he shot exclusively on the iPhone – and co-wrote the script with his frequent collaborator Chris Bergoch. Baker also produced the film with additional help from Duplass Brothers Productions. The cast features several promising up-and-comers including Kitana Kiki Rodriguez in the role of Sin-Dee and Mya Taylor as Alexandra. James Ransone (Sinister, Inside Man) also stars as Chester.
The trailer is vibrant with its feisty characters, foul-mouthed dialogue, and intimately aggressive filming style. With a tone similar to 2013’s Spring Breakers, the actors blend into and elevate their gritty, fast-paced environment.
Magnolia Pictures picked up Tangerine after its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and plans to release it in select theaters on July 10. Check out the trailer below.
