Rocky Balboa lives on! And so does Apollo Creed, apparently. Apollo’s grandson, Adonis, will be carrying on the late fictional boxer’s legacy in the latest installment of the Rocky franchise, titled Creed. Sylvester Stallone will return in the role of his famed character, Rocky, in order to train the next generation of pugilists. His main pupil will be the descendant of his former friend and competitor, portrayed by Fruitvale Station’s Michael B. Jordan.
Jordan’s former Fruitvale director, Ryan Coogler, is reuniting with the actor for this sequel and has also penned the script. Little is currently known about the plot beyond what the above image reveals. We do know however, that the franchise’s 7th installment will also star Tessa Thompson (Dear White People), Graham McTavish (TV’s Outlander), and Phylicia Rashad (TV’s The Cosby Show).
Creed will be joining at least two other boxing films this year. 2015 will also see the release of the Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer Southpaw, as well as Bleed For This, a Vinny Pazienza biopic starring Miles Teller. Jordan and Teller are both enjoying oddly similar career trajectories at the moment. The two first co-starred together in the testosterone-infused rom-com That Awkward Moment and will soon appear together again in the Fantastic Four reboot. Both have also been seriously on the rise after their dramatic turns – Jordan in Fruitvale and Teller in Whiplash. There should be equal excitement for both actors and their boxing flicks (in addition to Southpaw) come their release later this year.
Creed hits theaters on November 25th.
