WarnerBros has finally revealed the trailer for the long-awaited sequel to the sci-fi cult classic Matrix. Shown to the public for the first time at the CinemaCon, this morning finally all fans could witness the return of Keanu Reeves in his career-changing role of Neo. The Village Roadshow co-produced film will also have Lana Wachowski return as the co-writer and director of the new Matrix Resurrections.
We return to the Matrix for the first time since the 2003 back-to-back movies Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions. The movie title Resurrections gives us a small hint as to what is going on in this new installment of the franchise. The last time we saw Neo he was an unstoppable force of nature with god-like powers taking down agent Smith in the virtual world and broking a deal with the creator of the Matrix himself to stop the machines from destroying Zion in the real world.
Now, Neo seems to be living inside the Matrix again much like in the first Matrix movie, completely oblivious of his previous life as humanity’s savior. We see familiar faces such as fan-favorite character Trinity, by Carrie-Anne Moss, who is alive but also seems to have completely forgotten her successful career as an ass-kicking hacker and Neo’s lover.
Taking the famous blue pill is keeping Neo in check and preventing him from questioning his reality. Until Yahya Abdul-Mateen’s character, very much inspired by Laurence Fishburne’s character Morpheus from the original trilogy, gives him a taste of the life on the red pill, and everything changes.
From what we can tell, Neo is going to regain his powers and maybe even regain access to his deleted memory files. What we do know for sure is that it’s going to take him down a path full of explosions, kung-fu, impossible jumps, and lots of gunfire.
The Matrix Resurrections film is set to be released on Dec. 22 in theaters and on HBO Max.
