Since it came out, Obsession has been making quite the splash in theaters, being a hot commodity both critically and financially speaking. It would seem as though audiences are utterly obsessed with it, as its second-week drop is a historical one, even with staunch competition for Memorial Day. Obsession follows a young man looking for the perfect girlfriend. But when he suddenly gets that wish, he realizes that he got himself in way over his head, as she becomes utterly infatuated with him, to the point where she’ll harm anyone, even herself, for him.
Being out for only two weeks as of this writing, Obsession has already managed to resonate with audiences. Rotten Tomatoes has the film at an even 95% between both audience and critic scores, while IMDb has it sitting at an 8.2. Its first weekend gross saw it open to $17 million, per BoxOfficeMojo, but thanks to hugely positive word of mouth, it was bound to go up from there. Screenrant noted that this is shocking, especially for a horror movie, which on average usually experiences a major drop after its debut weekend.
While it’s far more common for the second weekend to drop in revenue, it’s the complete opposite for Obsession. The second weekend is expected to see it make 30% more than what it did initially, looking to bring in $22 million ($28.2 if accounting for Memorial Day), as Variety noted.
