Although it was a big weekend for trailers thanks to the Super Bowl, it was a very slow weekend for the box office. It was particularly slow for Melania, however, as it saw an immense drop moving into its second weekend of circulation.
As the name suggests, Melania follows Melania Trump, wife of the current President Donald Trump. The film in particular focuses on the weeks leading up to President Trump’s second inauguration in 2025, and the preparations Melania has to arrange before the transition to the White House can occur.
As it moved into its second weekend after its debut, Melania hardly put up noteworthy numbers at the box office. Across the three days, it only made $2.3 million. The Guardian noted that this is a colossal drop from its already tame opening gross of $7.2 million, marking a 67% drop in revenue.
The Guardian also noted that the drop comes after a major divide in how audiences have taken to the film. While critics took very negatively to it, specifically on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience reviews were overwhelmingly warm. The company that oversees Rotten Tomatoes themselves have made a statement, however, debunking any speculation about the 99% Audience Score being illegitimate.
“Reviews displayed on the Popcornmeter are VERIFIED reviews,” they told Variety, following that with an explanation of how a review winds up verified on Rotten Tomatoes.
