After an alluring first look, a second trailer for the Warner Bros. con caper Focus has been released. The film stars Will Smith (After Earth), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), and Rodrigo Santoro (300: Rise of an Empire), and is written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love).
The current trailer focuses more on the relationship between Smith and Robbie, chronicling their “meet-cute” through a failed con and how they reunite some years later. From there, things seem to hint at a sort of cat-and-mouse pattern of one-upmanship, as well as the who-can-be-trusted theme that usually is a staple in these type of films. It’s also a trailer heavy on sex appeal, pretty set pieces, and exotic locales, giving the film a sleek look into the high-life of con artistry.
Focus follows Nicky, a pro con-man, who gets too attached to his novice protege Jess and cuts off ties with her, only for her to reappear years later as he’s in the midst of a larger, riskier con. Focus will be the first of two co-starring roles for Smith and Robbie, as the two have been confirmed to play Deadshot and Harley Quinn, respectively, in David Ayer’s (Fury) upcoming Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. For Santoro, Focus marks his second collaborative pairing with directors Ficarra and Requa, after working with the two in 2009’s I Love You, Phillip Morris.
Focus will be released on February 27th, 2015. It marks the first time a Will Smith led-vehicle will be released in the typically barren month since 2005’s Hitch, as movies starring the actor have typically been given release dates in the highly competitive summer or during the holidays. It should be noted however, that Hitch did go on to become a financial success for the actor.
