Most of us following the news surrounding the Fantastic Four reboot had already been made aware some time ago that the film would be an origin story without even being given the plot synopsis. That news was pretty much expected ever since the announcement of the young cast of actors in Miles Teller (Whiplash), Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station), Jamie Bell (Snowpiercer), and Kate Mara (Netflix’s House of Cards). Still, plot details were not fully known until the first trailer arrived, which showed the four heroes journeying to an alternate universe where they gain their special abilities. But now, by way of a second trailer, 20th Century Fox has made it abundantly clear just how much of an origin story the film will be, focusing on setting up each of the characters backgrounds and personalities before getting to the disaster that befalls them.
The trailer for the film also gives us a better glimpse at each character in their altered form. While the first teaser really only briefly showed us a glimpse of Jordan’s The Human Torch – as well as a shapeless form of rocks moving which was undoubtedly Jamie Bell as The Thing – this trailer provides us with our first glimpse of the super team as more than just wide eyed young adults. It also shows us our first shot of Victor Domashev, or Dr. Doom, played by Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes).
The focus on origins could perhaps be a way to assure casual fans that this is a very different film from the much maligned 2005 version of The Fantastic Four. It also establishes a much darker tone than the more light, campy one of the previous incarnation, following the feel of director Josh Trank’s previous feature Chronicle, as well as that of writer Simon Kinberg’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.
20th Century Fox will release Fantastic Four on August 7th.
