Neon has released an emotional new trailer for Joachim Trier’s Norwegian drama Sentimental Value. Starring Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning, the Cannes Grand Prix-winning film explores complex familial relationships amid the pressures of artistic ambition.
The trailer opens with a voiceover from estranged daughter, Nora (Reinsve), who reflects on her relationship with her father, Gustav (Skarsgård), a renowned director. “He’s a very difficult person,” she says. “We can’t really talk.”
As an artist herself, Nora’s disappointment is evident when her father fails to show up to her stage performance. The story unfolds as Nora turns down an acting role in her father’s comeback film. When she refuses, Gustav offers the part to an eager young Hollywood star, American Rachel Kemp (Fanning).
“It’s hard to be an actress,” Gustav tells his daughter. “It erodes your self-confidence, and your need for attention becomes insufferable.”
“How can you tell? You don’t even know us,” she responds.
“Everyone’s mad at Dad, huh?”
Sentimental Value marks another collaboration between Reinsve and Trier following The Worst Person in the World (2021), which earned Reinsve the Award for Best Actress at Cannes.
Trier co-wrote the screenplay with Eskil Vogt, and the film is produced by Maria Ekerhovd and Andrea Berensten Ottmar.
The film opens in select theaters on November 7, 2025.
