Screen Media has acquired all North American rights to the upcoming indie thriller Blood and Money, which will star Emmy-winner Tom Berenger. Cinematographer John Barr wrote and directed the film, formally titled Allagash, which will also be his first feature directorial debut.
The story is centered around a retired veteran (Berenger) hunting in the Allagash backcountry of Northern Maine. The plot thickens once he discovers a dead woman with a duffle bag containing a large sum of money. Things spiral out of control when the veteran encounters a group of criminals in search of the money after a failed casino robbery lands them in the middle of the woods while trying to escape to Canada. As they hunt one another over the course of a few days, the stark and frigid landscape ominously proposes a challenge to a their will and survival. What was a man vs. man test becomes the ultimate conflict of man vs, nature where the hunter becomes the hunted. Kristen Hager and Paul Ben-Victor are set to co-star with Berenger, with Suza Horvat producing.
Berenger is best known for winning the Emmy’s Outstanding Supporting Actor for his performance as Jim Vance in the 2012 miniseries Hatfields & McCoys. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 1986 Academy Awards for his portrayal of Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes in Platoon. Other credits include Jake Taylor in the Major League films and Thomas Beckett in the Sniper films.
According to Deadline, Seth Green, SVP of Global Acquisitions and Co-Productions for Screen Media, has expressed excitement and anticipation to making this film happen, stating “We’re really impressed with the strong filmmaking and riveting story and are excited to be working with John and Suza to bring Blood and Money to audiences very soon. Plus, who doesn’t love watching Tom Berenger take action?”
Screen Media’s upcoming projects include the mystery thriller Suicide Tourist starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, a historic drama Robert the Bruce starring Angus MacFadyen, and Willy’s Wonderland starring Nicolas Cage. Blood and Money is expected to release sometime in May.
