Scarlett Johansson and Chris Pratt join the well rounded cast of Spike Jonze’s quirky, sci-fi romance Her, also starring – Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara (stepping in for Carey Mulligan), Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams and Samantha Morton. Spike Jonze fans have been waiting since 2009’s, Where The Wild Things Are, for the gifted director’s next film. Patience pays off, as Warner Bros. announced Wednesday, on November 20th.
The off-kilter romance stars Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore, a lonely writer who falls in love with the voice of his newly acquired computer operating system. Neither Johansson’s nor Pratt’s role has been revealed, though there is speculation that Johansson will play the voice of the ‘breathlessly sexy’ computer. The unconventional romance is intended to highlight the close relationship people sometimes develop with their technological devices.
Traditionally cast in heavy dark roles (The Master, Gladiator), Her is a departure for Phoenix, revealing a lighter side, as stills from the set catch him wearing glasses, frolicking, and looking lovably nerdy.
Chris Pratt is well know for his role on the TV sitcom “Parks and Recreation” but has been making inroads into feature films with performances in Moneyball and Zero Dark Thirty. He will also be seen in Vince Vaughn’s upcoming comedy, The Delivery Man.
Her will face stiff competition when it does hit theaters. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire also premiere the week of November 20th. The first Hunger Games opened to rabid fan turnout and more than $150 million in receipts its opening weekend. Perhaps that’s why Jonze is trying to create extra anticipation by presenting preview clips of “Her” at next month’s LA Film Festival.
