The story of Scarface is well known in American culture. In 1932 Howard Hughes produced the film which starred Paul Muni as the prohibition era gangster Tony Camonte, who was fashioned after real-life mobster Al Capone (nicknamed ‘Scarface’). The film was based on the 1929 novel by Armitage Trail. Then in 1983 Brian De Palma remade the film using the screenplay by Oliver Stone. De Palma’s version starred Al Pacino as Cuban immigrant Tony Montana in his pursuit of the American Dream.
Well, Universal is looking to make another version of the story, and with a seemingly unlikely director. David Yates, best known for directing four of the Harry Potter films, is currently in talks to helm the project. Yates will direct the film based on the script by David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch). It will be interesting to watch how Ayer and Yates take the common themes from the first two films and translate them into a modern setting. Both films focus on their own specific time in American history and feature a character who is willing to chase the American Dream by any means necessary.
Scarface is currently in development and as of yet has no available timetable for release.
