Satellite Nominations Announced

Nominations for the 20th Satellite Awards were announced earlier this week. Hosted by the International Press Academy, the Satellite Awards honor the best in film yet have a decidedly low (and somewhat spotty reputation) in the awards race. The International Press Academy is comprised of both domestic and foreign journalists- think a lower scale Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

In years past, the Satellites have come under fire with incomplete and confusing nomination list as well as allegations that member hadn’t seen all the nominated movies. Two years ago specifically, Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street earned five nominations (including Best Motion Picture) only for claims after the fact by made that Paramount Pictures (that films’ distributor) hadn’t extended screening invitations to Satellite members.

This year a ten-wide Best Picture slate includes many films likely to go far on the awards circuit including Bridge of Spies, Carol and Spotlight. Ridley Scott’s The Martian leads the field with nine nominations. The ceremony will take place on February 21, 2016. Check out the full list of nominees below.
