Sarah Michelle Gellar Says She Won’t Return As Helen Shivers In “I Know What You Did Last Summer” Sequel

Sarah Michelle Gellar won’t reprise her role in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel.

With the reboot in the works, Gellar denied the possibility of her returning to the role of Helen Shivers.

“I am dead,” she told People

However, Gellar does have some input behind the scenes, as an unofficial continuity supervisor.

“My best friend [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity. So I’m always the one telling her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.”

Although Gellar will not be returning to the franchise, her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. will reprise his role of Ray Bronson. Jennifer Love Hewitt is also negotiating to reprise the role of Julie James.

The previously announced cast also includes Madelyn Cline, Jonah Haur-King, Sarah Pidgeon, Chase Sui Wonders, and Tyriq Withers.

Kaytin Robinson and Sam Lansky wrote the screenplay for the upcoming film from a draft by Leah McKendrick. Plot details have yet to be announced. The original film, which is loosely based off of a 1973 novel of the same name, was directed by Jim Gillespie and written by Kevin Williamson.

The film is set to release in theaters on July 18, 2025.
