Oscar-nominee Saoirse Ronan is stepping right into another period piece romance for the upcoming On Chesil Beach, according to Deadline. Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley of Number 9 Films and the pair behind this year’s smash period romance, Carol, are producing, while famed theater director Dominic Cooke (TV’s The Hollow Crown) is making his feature debut.
The story is an adaptation of an Ian McEwan novel that tells the story of Florence and her lover. The tale spans many years of their lives during the 1960s that are affected by unspoken words and unsatisfied feelings between the two of them. This will be Ronan’s second time starring in a McEwan adaptation after 2007’s Atonement for which she received her first Oscar nomination in the Supporting Actress category.
Ronan previously worked with Karlsen and Woolley on Byzantium, making her a shoe-in for the role. According to the producers:

While Number 9 has been establishing a reputation for developing lauded adaptations, so has Ronan with this year’s Oscar-nominated Brooklyn and the upcoming Chekhov film rendition of The Seagull, in addition to Cooke, who has directed countless Shakespeare productions for the stage.
Production will begin for On Chesil Beach this coming fall. Up next, Ronan will be seen in Loving Vincent – a Van Gogh story – and as the star of Greta Gerwig‘s directorial debut Lady Bird.
