Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy) already has a lot on his plate up ahead, a lineup which includes helming the Ash vs. Evil Dead television series as well as being in talks to direct a remake of the renowned thriller The Prophet, set to be written by novelist and screenwriter Dennis Lehane (Shutter Island, The Drop). He is now set to direct the futuristic thriller World War 3, based of the novel The Next 100 Years: A Forecast of the 21st Century by George Friedman.
The book uses various forms of analysis like historical context, demographics, and geopolitics to predict the future state of the world during this century. The term ‘World War 3’ is derived by a possible three-year conflict set to begin on 2050, as predicted by Friedman. With the many creative roads of possibilities that this project seems to be showing, Raimi should have plenty of ways of going about this science-fiction thriller. Especially with his past in horror films like The Evil Dead and Darkman, it is possible that we could be getting more of the 90s cult Raimi than what we have seen from him recently (his last film being Oz the Great and Powerful).
There is no set screenwriter or cast as of yet, but that should probably come soon. And although this will be more of a “serious” form of science-fiction, a place Raimi has not really ventured into, there is still a lot of realistic politics that will be infused throughout the story rather than just strictly fictionalized accounts. An official release date should be released by Warner Bros. after a script is set in place.
Ash vs. Evil Dead is currently airing on Starz. We will have more on World War 3 as details surface.
