Salma Hayek Fights the Yakuza in ‘Everly’ Trailer

Salma Hayek (Desparado) is going to keep the streak of female action stars going in 2015, as can be seen in the trailer for Everly. Hayek plays a Yakuza prostitute-turned informant who must defend her apartment from a seemingly endless barrage of assailants so she can make a getaway with her daughter.

Hayek hasn’t starred in an action movie since she teamed up with Penelope Cruz (The Counselor) in Luc Besson’s (Lucy) 2006 western, Bandidas. She has kept to comedies as of late, with Grown Ups 2 (2013) and the upcoming How to Make Love Like a Englishman (2014). She’s also set to star with John Travolta in the heartfelt drama A Three Dog Life. Everly was directed by Joe Lynch, whose only other theatrical release was 2013’s little-seen Knights of Badassdom, a horror comedy about a group LARP-ers (Live-Action Roleplayers) who are forced to fight off a real demon.

Everly will also follow in that movie’s footsteps by being released digitally at the same time as its theatrical release, a common practice for independent films which recently drew mainstream attention last week when Sony released The Interview via digital distribution. The film will be available to anyone who wants to see it when it releases on iTunes and On Demand January 23. Theatrically-inclined audiences can see it in select theaters February 27.
