The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has recently shown its support for the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) regarding the decision to begin renegotiations with Hollywood employers in asking for better rights for its workers (Variety).
The SAG-AFTRA released a statement on the matter stating,
“SAG-AFTRA stands strongly in support and solidarity with the members of the Writers Guild of America who are engaged in contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. It is long past time for the studios, streamers, and other employers in the entertainment industry to remove roadblocks to fair and equitable wages and working conditions, and to agree to terms that reflect the unique worth and contribution of creative talent and workers, without whom the industry would not exist.”
This statement comes two days after the Directors Guild of America announced to their members that their union is bound by contract to have a no-strike clause. As a result, the SAF-AFTRA’s statement remains significant and sends a strong message to those in power within the Hollywood system. It demonstrates solidarity among the guilds and against the system even when some guilds cannot join the potential strike.
