Saban Films Acquires ‘The Confirmation’

Upstart Saban Films has picked up North American rights to the comedy-drama The Confirmation starring Clive Owen (Closer). The film marks the directorial debut of Bob Nelson, the Oscar nominated screenwriter of the 2013 Alexander Payne feature Nebraska. While release plans are not ironed it, it’s expected that Saban will release the film in spring 2016. Nelson also wrote the screenplay.

The Confirmation tells the story of 8-year-old Anthony (Jaeden Lieberher, St. Vincent) and his initial reluctance to spend a weekend with his father, an alcoholic named Walt (Owen). While tenuous at first, father and son start to bond and bring out the best in one another. The film looks like another slice of life, character drama in the vein of Nebraska. Maria Bello (Prisoners), Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises) co-star.

“Clive Owen and Jaeden Lieberher made an immediate heartfelt connection as father and son that resonates with audiences,” stated Saban Films president Bill Bromiley. “Their performances enhance Bob Nelson’s superior script and direction. The Confirmation will be a strong addition to the Saban slate.”

While new to the field, Saban made an impression last year with their acquisition of the well received Tommy Lee Jones western The Homesman which was released stateside with the aid of Roadside Attractions and premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. Saban’s upcoming slate includes the Tom Tykwer film A Hologram for the King starring Tom Hanks and Man Up starring Simon Pegg (The World’s End) and Lake Bell (In a World…).
