S.J. Clarkson has been hired to direct the next Star Trek film. Per Variety, she will be the first female director of a Star Trek movie, though several women have directed episodes of the various Trek TV shows. This will be the follow-up to 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond, and is unrelated to the mysterious Star Trek project that Quentin Tarantino is working on.
Clarkson is mostly known for her work on several high-profile TV shows. She has directed episodes of Jessica Jones (specifically the pilot), The Defenders, Dexter, and she directed an episode of Orange is the New Black. Her latest project is a BBC mini-series called Collateral, which stars Carey Mulligan.
The untitled Star Trek sequel will reportedly revolve around Chris Pine‘s character (James Tiberius Kirk) experiencing some sort of time event and getting to hang out with his late father, played by Chris Hemsworth. Zachary Quinto (Spock) and John Cho (Sulu) are also confirmed to return.
