Ryan Reynolds Doubts ‘Free Guy’ Sequel, Cites ‘Green Lantern’ Failure

While headlining the Just For Laughs comedy festival in London, Ryan Reynolds sat down for a conversation with his Deadpool 2 co-star Rob Delaney. Delaney took the opportunity to ask about the possibility of upcoming sequels for any of the films Reynold has produced, including Free Guy.

Reynolds responded: “There is the potential to do a sequel to Free Guy, which would be fun. I would love it. But also, like, does everything fucking have to be a sequel? Sometimes it’s OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone go home.”

“There’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one,’” Reynolds continued. “No, the first movie validates the first one, and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it.”

Inevitably, Reynolds’ role in the 2011 film Green Lantern. According to Reynolds, the movie failed from “Too much time, too much money.”

“There was just too many people spending too much money, and when there was a problem rather than say, ‘Okay, let’s stop spending on special effects and let’s think about character,” he explained. “How do we replace this big spectacle thing – that isn’t working at all – with something that’s character based?’ The thinking was never there to do that. And to their credit, it’s a very old school way of looking at things. It’s just ‘Let’s just keep spending our way through this.’ And that was – it didn’t work.”

During the talk, Reynolds also discussed his long-running fake feud with Hugh Jackman, on account of the upcoming Deadpool 3 movie, where Jackman will be reprising his iconic role as Wolverine. Reynolds warmly described his time working with the Jackman on X-Men Origins Wolverine in 2007 – while referring to the film as an “absolute trash fire” – citing the actor’s kindness towards everyone on the set and looking forward to their upcoming collaboration.
