Deadpool & Wolverine will be an R-rated movie and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) says he is surprised Disney allowed filmmakers that creative freedom. While it shocked him, he was still grateful for the chance to tell the beloved heroes’ story properly. “I mean, there’s no other way to do it. For this character and this world, and particularly Logan being an R-rated film as well,” Reynolds said in Fandango interview.

Reynolds called this version of Wolverine “the most full-throated version of Wolverine or Logan” ever brought to the silver screen. “So it really allowed us a lot of freedom, not exploiting the R rating just to do R-rated stuff, but really allowing us to do anything and everything in a world where anything and everything is possible,” he gushed.

Reynolds continued to express his pride in Disney for letting them go “Hard R” with the film. He commended them for “taking a huge step” and said, It adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining for forever.”

Deadpool & Wolverine is the next movie from Marvel, but director Shawn Levy says that no prior knowledge of the MCU is required to see the film. While Levy made the film with “a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world,” the director didn’t want to presume too much from his audience. “This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research,” Levy said.

Deadpool & Wolverine opens in theaters on July 26.
