According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired Ryan Coogler’s new untitled supernatural thriller starring Hailee Steinfeld and Michael B. Jordan. The project endured a high-profile bidding war earlier at the start of this year with Warner Bros. winning due to a unique deal in that they will hand some of the film’s rights back to the filmmaker over a period of time. It will start production later this month in New Orleans. Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jack O’Connell will be starring alongside Steinfeld and Jordan.
Although there is much left unknown about the project currently, insiders have given hints about the film’s themes; however, it should be noted these comments have not been confirmed by the studio or Coogler yet. The unconfirmed details include a Jim Crow-era South setting, supernatural elements such as vampires, and Jordan potentially having a dual role in the film. There have also been other leaks about what roles the cast will be playing, such as Mosaku acting as Jordan’s romantic interest and O’Connell playing a racist antagonist. Steinfeld’s role is still being kept tightly under wraps at the moment.
The script for the project was written by Coogler. His production company Proximity Media will be producing the film alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.
There is a release date set for March 7, 2025.
