Ryan Coogler’s newest feature, Sinners, has already made an impact at the box office, seemingly critically too, as it took home a grand $4.7 million in its Thursday debut.
This supernatural period film centering around vampires marks the fifth collaboration between Coogler, in the director’s chair, and actor Michael B. Jordan. First working together on Coogler’s 2013 film Fruitvale Station, the second on 2015’s Creed, and its sequel, and 2018’s Black Panther. Set in 1932, Sinners centers around Jordan, who plays “dual roles as identical twin entrepreneurs known as Smoke and Stack. Having survived the World War I trenches and Chicago gangland, the brothers return after seven years to their segregated Mississippi Delta hometown, Clarksdale. They are flush with cash and have a truckload of liquor and a plan to open a juke joint. However, they encounter unexpected horrors.”
Already, audiences and critics alike are floored by it, with a Popcornmeter score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and a CinemaScore of A. Distributed by Warner Bros., they are estimating an opening weekend around the $35-40 million range for the supernatural period feature. But other predictions from opposing studios and tracking estimations have it going up to the $45-50 million range.
Another factor Sinners has to include in their opening weekend debut is who in the box office they are going up against. Minecraft, starring Jack Black, hit the $300 million mark on Thursday at the domestic box office. This video game adaptation is predicted to comfortably reach the $40-45 million range in “its third outing” while it passes the $600 million mark globally. If it keeps up a performance like this, Minecraft will become “one of the top video game adaptations of all time” and the top-grossing feature of 2025.
Regardless, it will be exciting to see how these two films perform this Easter weekend.
