Ryan Coogler Shares Unexpected Inspiration For ‘Sinners’

Although there are still several big releases to go before 2025 winds down, this year has been a big one for movies. Among some of the big hits are Sinners, with the director sharing an unexpected source of inspiration for the film.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B Jordan, Sinners follows two brothers returning to their small hometown in the midst of the Great Depression. While trying to throw a celebration alongside their friends, an old evil begins to spread through the town, threatening to ruin their festivities.

As for the vampires in the film, Screenrant noted that there is an infusion of Irish folklore. The main vampire is even played by Jack O’Connell, who hails from Irish descent. But Coogler opened up about some of the inspiration for Sinners and the decision to utilize Irish culture the way he did.

It was none other than Luck Of The Irish, a Disney Channel movie, that showed Coogler the richness of Irish culture, and as ScreenRant put it, also helped him to see similarities between Irish and African American cultures.

“That movie was kind of a touchpoint for us to jump off of, crazy enough. We’ve been fascinated with that culture in my family,” Coogler said during Contenders Film, hosted by Deadline.
